This year the Johnson family is once again asking for donations in memory of William “Bill” Johnson to benefit veteran treatment for PTSD through Equines for Freedom. In lieu of attending an event as held previously, this year we are requesting monetary donations.
The Johnson family experienced the trauma of PTSD firsthand through Bill.
Bill, a Navy Vietnam veteran, operated in the Mekong River Delta and connecting waterways as part of the Riverine Warfare group. An engineman and bow gunner on an alpha boat and an adviser to the South Vietnamese Military, Bill served overseas for about a year. He was subsequently stationed at the Naval Submarine Base in Groton, Connecticut where he worked as a diesel mechanic until he separated from the Navy, earning an honorable discharge in January 1973. Bill was awarded a Purple Heart, a National Defense Medal, and a Vietnam Service Medal for his service. He eventually passed away due to the lasting effects of Agent Orange exposure in December 2008.
